Find out the right style of haircut for your face shape with our handy guide.
As the seasons change, I find myself getting restless with my current look and style. With any change in my life for that matter (big or small), whether it is starting a new job, celebrating a birthday or even going on a holiday, I look for ways to refresh my look so that my appearance reflects the changes in my life. I always find that a new hairstyle is just what I need. It’s amazing how a simple change to your hairstyle can alter your appearance drastically!
Over the years I have sported many different hairstyles. Whether it is heavy set bangs, wispy bangs, bright red hair, bouncy brown curls or a sleek bob – I’ve had it. Regardless of how much of thought I put into the type of hairstyle that I wanted, most of the time I felt like the haircut just did not compliment me well. That was until I learned the importance that ‘face shape’ plays in finding the perfect hairstyle.
We’ve all heard the saying ‘one size does not fit all’ and haircuts and styles are no different. What looks gorgeous on Kim Kardashian is not necessarily going to look the same on you or myself. Why is this? It’s because our faces come in various shapes. If you haven’t done so already, I highly recommend popping into your local hairdresser to find out the type of hairstyle that best suits your face shape.
Here’s a handy guide to the different face shapes and some general rules of thumb on what is and what isn’t flattering.
Heart
The most recommended haircut for the heart face shape is to keep the length long and parted to the side as this helps to highlight your features. To balance an angled jawline, try creating some soft waves starting just under the ear. For those with mid length hair, texture is the key to softening sharp features! Prefer to keep your hair shorter? Opt for textured ends to soften sharp jawlines and chin.
Just like the heart shape, textured hair is most flattering for this face shape. Subtle layering or waves will help to soften sharp jawlines on a square shape, regardless of hair length. Longer lengths are best at detracting from sharp jawlines.
Oval
Think bangs! A side fringe or even a blunt fringe is perfect in creating a balanced face without making it look too long, short or thin. This face shape suits both long and shorter styles.
Round
When styling hair on this face shape, try to avoid adding too much of volume to the top of the hair as it can make your face appear to be much wider. When cutting and layering it is best to start from around the base of the face. By doing this, attention is drawn to the bottom of the hair making the face shape appear more elongated. Want your round face shape to appear slimmer? Try an asymmetrical cut like the one below.
I hope that these clever little tricks help you as much as they have helped me! Find your local hairdresser today at Look Local WA to find the best hairstyle for your face shape!
