The exciting (and scary) day has finally come – you’re moving. Whether it’s into your own home or a new rental, moving house is a big deal. But unfortunately unless properly managed it can also become a big headache!
It’s only when you come to move house that you realise just how much STUFF you have, ranging from the essential to the bizarre (thanks Aunt Marge.) As you go it is a great opportunity to make some choices and clear out some of the clutter. But with so much to think about - should you keep this, don’t keep that, what’s fragile, what can go into to storage - excitement can turn to exasperation very quickly.
Most of all, it is incredibly frustrating to not have the things you need at hand or lost amongst the sea of boxes.
1) First off, pack a bag like you’re going on holiday for your essentials. Thinking about it as a holiday bag is a great way to make sure that you have all the things you’re likely to need - we all know the holiday checklist!
2) For those important items that are not going in your essentials bag but you will likely need over the next week, such as toilet paper, utensils, tools and so on, pack them in a clear plastic bin so you can both see inside it for what you need and also spot it easily amongst the boxes.
3) Finally, write the contents of each box on it's outside and use a colour system by location. Colour labelling your boxes by their designated room helps the movers easily tell what goes where.
With the essentials at hand, you can destress and unpack in your own time.
