Decorate your space with these easy DIY art ideas.
I remember saying to my father once, “Don’t worry, I could take a milk crate and make it look good!” He was helping me shift into my first house and was concerned I had no furniture to make the place look lived in.
Over the years, I’ve really come to believe that “necessity is the mother of invention”. As long as you have access to DIY videos on YouTube, a desire to turn a space into a home, and a willingness to give something a go, nothing is beyond your reach. Not even a body without a creative bone!
Upcycling is a buzz word which has been bandied around the halls of interior-design lovers the past few years. It means taking something old and not only making it new again, but redesigning it into something beautiful and contemporary. One of my favourite projects is to do up coffee tables I find in junkyards. I sand back the legs as best I can with sandpaper bought from a local hardware and give them either a lick of paint (if the timber isn’t too crash hot) or varnish them (if the grain is interesting). Next, I replace the tops (if not in good condition) with thick glass bought at a wholesalers.

Grab a large canvas from a variety shop (they usually cost around twenty bucks) and cover it with either wallpaper or fabric (look in oddment baskets at haberdasheries). You have an instant wall-hanging without the pain of trying topaint a picture on it. Alternatively paint it all one colour. Block a few canvases with complimentary colours together. Not only do they look fabulous, you can change them with each season!

A current trend is to cover lampshades with unique papers or pictures, like sewing patterns, comic books, old maps and music sheets. They add personality and quirk to side tables and standard lamps. You can try overlaying either an existing framework or a plastic base. I also love to hang table lampshades from ceiling pendants and upside down ceiling shades on table lamps!
If you’re pretty handy with a paint brush, grab a cheap dressing table from a second-hand shop or junkyard, sand it back, undercoat it, then paint a scene over it. It doesn’t need to be elaborate, shapes or splashed paint can look remarkable too. I paint everything from calico dresses to huge urns and pots, fridges and side tables. Sand still long enough in my house and you might get paint thrown over you too!
Post and greeting cards equal instant artwork for your home. Mass all of your postcards from your travels together, or favourite images, onto one big canvas. You can either cover them in clear contact or paint over a thin layer of lacquer for protection. Collect old frames, paint them all black, or white, or all different bright colours. Buy up (over time) beautiful art cards, place in the frames and arrange them on your shelves or wall. Instant art.
